Monday March 9, 2009
Launceston's Pancake Day proved a success with over 100 people attending the event held at Pilgrim Uniting Church in the Paterson St church grounds last Tuesday week.
The annual event organised by UnitingCare in Launceston aims to raise awareness about the effect of poverty helps to raise money to aid disadvantaged Australians.
Also known as Shrove Tuesday, Pankcake Day is the traditional religious event to use the last fat and sugar in the pantry to prepare for frugal eating during Lent.
As well as eating pankcakes, the Launceston festival held pancake races in Civic Square that involved tossing pancakes while running to the finish line.
Event organiser Caroline Ball reported that the Launceston Pancake Day raised about $1,200 and around 500 pancakes were consumed.
